| Inmate wounded in prison shooting charged |

An Allendale Correctional Institution inmate who was wounded with a gun smuggled into the prison has been charged in connection with the incident. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division says George Brown, 34, has been charged with possession of contraband by a prisoner at the institution near Fairfax. Brown and another inmate, Dean Ford, 29, were shot by a third prisoner on April 28th. Investigators have not identified that person. Corrections officials also have charged Ford and Jessica Hanna of Lancaster with conspiring to get a 25-caliber handgun into the prison. Prison employee Kezia Fennell of Brunson, a medical assistant who had worked for the Corrections Department since 2000, also has been charged. Investigators say Fennell was paid $250 to sneak the gun to inmates. Fennell was a medical assistant at the prison who was suspended after her arrest in June. Ford is serving a three year sentence that began last August for failure to stop for an officer. In 1994 Brown began serving a 20-year sentence for assault and battery with intent to kill. The South Carolina Department of Corrections web site reports Allendale Correctional Institution opened in 1989. The Level 3 facility is on Highway 47 in Fairfax and is lead by Warden George Hagan. SCDC says, "Level 3 facilities are high security institutions designed primarily to house violent offenders with longer sentences. Single and double cell housing have close staff supervision and controlled movement. The highly secured double-fenced perimeter has armed coverage and electronic security." |
