County wonders if taking over closed prison worth the effort

Florida -- Brevard County is considering whether to acquire part of the sprawling site of a now-closed state correctional institution in Sharpes.

But it isn’t sure what it might do with the facilities there — or if it’s even worth the trouble, considering the potential repair and upkeep costs involved.

The Florida Department of Corrections has proposed that the county take ownership of the Brevard Correctional Institution property, south of Camp Road, and lease back some of the property to the state for an existing work camp and administration building.

The County Commission initially was scheduled to consider the proposal Tuesday, but the item was been pulled from the agenda for further study, and could come up for discussion in September.

In 1971, the county deeded the property to what at the time was called the Florida Division of Corrections, with the stipulation that if the state ever ceased to use the property for corrections purposes, the property would revert to the county.

The Brevard Correctional Institution, which was used to house men ages 18 to 25, was closed last year as part of a statewide consolidation effort aimed at cutting costs. At its peak, the facility had 1,032 inmates and a staff of 352.

Assistant County Manager Stockton Whitten said there are a variety of issues the county is researching, including the condition of the buildings on the site, the potential cost of their upkeep and what the county might want to do with them.

One option, Whitten said, is to keep the property in reserve if the county ever needed to expand its own jail facilities, which are nearby. He plans to consult with officials of the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office to determine what the county’s future jail needs might be.
