EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- It's been happening in prisons across the state and right here in the Chippewa valley, corrections officers being assaulted by inmates. WEAU 13 News is finding out what's being done to make sure prisons are a safer place to work. A memo to staff from the Wisconsin Department of Corrections addressing those assaults has come to light. The document says assaults on corrections officers are up this year from last year. Even though Gary Hamblin, the DOC secretary didn't elaborate on what's causing the assaults, union reps say changes to collective bargaining are causing a tense environment in the prison system. The three page memo is the first time the DOC has addressed the scary trend of assaults on guards. They've gone up significantly, nearly 30 more than in the first four months of last year. The state said in 75 percent of the assaults, the inmates has a mental health diagnosis. Some of the prisons have a history of assaults. Others like the Stanley Correctional Institution didn't have any in 2011. So far this year, Stanley has had three reported assaults. The DOC said it's taken so long to address the attacks because there hasn't been a central location to pool assault reports. “Before, we had a mechanism for them to deal with them. Since Act 10 we don’t,” said Marty Beil, the executive director of the Wisconsin State Employees Union. Beil said with more experienced officers retiring, newer officers, already exhausted on overtime, have to step in to control a growing prison population. “We didn’t see any intervention. We didn’t see the secretary saying we have to do something about this,” Beil said. Read More. |
