Canadian government trying to block 'cell' phones |

Ottawa - The Canadian government is shopping for information from telecommunication companies to control and put an end to the operations of criminals. The problem is, these criminals are already behind bars. It is a known fact that prisoners are using mobile or other wireless devices to conduct a slew of operations from the comfort of a cell. According to a FBI report, these operations range from threatening witnesses, send disturbing photos to victims, organize crimes on the outside and intimidate some in the inside. Cell phones and other wireless devices are officially banned in Canadian jails, but prisoners always find ways to smuggle them in. Once in a while, a cell phone will turn up during a search, but more often than not they will remain hidden. Although the media can't, for now, give a precise idea of the extent of the problem, let's just say that last year alone, 120 cell phones were confiscated in Canadian prisons, and the problem seems to be serious enough for the Canadian government to try to come up with “effective and sustainable methods of preventing the use of mobile devices by inmates”.
