| Prison health privatization to continue plans under ruling |

Florida -- A Leon County judge denied a request to rehear a case, paving the way for the state Department of Corrections to continue with plans to privatize its health services. Judge Kevin J. Carroll handed down the denial on Monday, which ended an attempt by the Florida Nurses Association and the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees to review the way the state DOC planned to privatize health services, impacting 2,600 employees. However, Carroll’s denial was without prejudice, meaning the employee union and nurses association could return with a new request. Last year, the Legislature used budget language known as a proviso to allow the state DOC to submit a request for proposals to privatize prison health care. That proviso expired in June with the end of the fiscal year and led Carroll to believe the issue was over.
