New High School at Anchorage Jail Educates Young Inmates |

Anchorage, Alaska — A new program at the Anchorage Correctional Complex is giving young inmates a chance to earn their high school diploma. Classes at New Path High School began last week in a separate unit within the jail. The 14 students live in the unit which can house a maximum of 32 inmates who wish to work toward graduating. It is a new partnership between the state Department of Corrections and the Anchorage School District for inmates age 22 or younger. "All the research shows that individuals who have been in trouble with the law have a much higher success rate of being successful in the community upon their release, if they have an education and they have an opportunity to develop some employment skills," said Carmen Gutierrez, deputy commissioner of the DOC.
