BERLIN – The first minimum-security inmates arrived at the federal prison in Berlin yesterday. Local officials called the start of operations at the prison a milestone in the region’s efforts to diversify the local economy. U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen announced the arrival of the first of the 128 minimum-security inmates that will be housed in a separate facility on the grounds of the medium security prison. The exact number of inmates that arrived Thursday was not available but a BOP spokeswoman last month said 60 minimum-security inmates were expected to be on-site by the end of October. “I know how hard everyone in the community has worked to ensure Berlin Prison’s opening and I am glad to see that the prison took an important step today with the arrival of its first minimum-security inmates. This step signifies that Berlin prison is now an official federal correctional facility within the Bureau of Prisons,” Shaheen said. “Bringing jobs back to the North Country is crucial for the economic revitalization of the North Country and Berlin prison has already brought a new energy to the community,” she added. Shaheen said the BOP has hired 115 people so far for the Berlin facility and nine more are expected to be hired by the end of September. When fully staffed, the prison will employ 341 people.
