Wisconsin prison officers want own union |

Madison - Correctional officers at three state prisons are trying to break away from the international union that has represented them for decades to form their own association in the latest sign of fallout from last year's scaling back of collective bargaining for public workers. Last week, officers and other workers at Dodge, Waupun and Taycheedah correctional institutions voted to form a new group called the Wisconsin Association for Correctional Law Enforcement, according to Brian Cunningham, a Waupun officer who is serving as the group's interim president. A membership drive will begin this week. Cunningham said he expects workers at seven other prisons to join their new union within a month. Government unions are ether going to be part of the past or we will be in deep trouble as these two ideologies come into conflict. It is just a matter of time. I belonged to the Teamsters for a while and they were strong but now the power is devolving. When the government is in bed with unions that is like mixing linen and woolen. The fabric of this country is then weakened even more economically. I see no political solution.
