WY Department of Corrections Submits Annual Report
By Wyoming Department of Corrections
Published: 09/10/2012

Cheyenne – The Wyoming Department of Corrections (WDOC) submitted their annual report to the Governor’s Office on Friday, August 31. The nine-page document reflects WDOC’s performance for the 2012 fiscal year, and primarily consists of five data-driven performance measures which relate to the department’s primary functions of providing public safety, offender rehabilitation, case management, correctional standards and good stewardship.

Each performance measure within the report includes a five-to-seven year trend line, a narrative interpretation of data, and a summary of accomplishments. The performance measures included in this year’s report are as follows:
  • The percentage of employees who remain employed by the department;
  • The percentage of probationers and parolees who successfully complete supervision and do not return to the WDOC within three years of release from supervision;
  • The percentage of inmates who do not return to prison for a new felony conviction within three years of release from the institution;
  • The percentage of inmates with assessed programmatic, education or work needs who completed the recommended treatment or intervention(s); and
  • The percentage of compliance with correctional audit standards.

These performance measures directly affect the overall mission of the WDOC, which is to contribute to public safety by exercising reasonable, safe, secure and humane management, while actively providing offenders opportunities to become law abiding citizens.

“We continue to make significant progress and should celebrate our successes, while maintaining our efforts for continued improvement,” said WDOC Director Robert Lampert. “I have never worked with a harder working, more dedicated or successful group of correctional professionals. That is why I know we will be able to accomplish even more in the upcoming year”.

Policy and Planning Manager Brian Farmer, one of the key authors of the report, echoed Lampert’s comments. “As indicated in the report, the data is encouraging,” Farmer said. “Our Department is moving in the right direction”.

Under Wyoming Statute, every state agency is required to submit an annual report to the Governor. The WDOC annual report is widely considered to be one of the most important documents the department completes in a year. “Preparing this report was a time intensive effort that required a high level of collaboration among numerous senior level staff members. It was very much a team effort, and I appreciate all the hard work my staff put in on a job well done,” said Lampert.
