Oswego, NY -- Oswego County has so many more inmates than the space available to house them, it may have to spend an extra $1.3 million beyond what was budgeted for jail expenses this year. County lawmakers will vote this week whether to give Sheriff Reuel Todd $900,000 to run the county jail through the end of the year. That’s on top of an extra $400,00 it approved earlier this year for that purpose. Todd said he needs the money to help pay the costs of sending inmates to other county jails because there is too little room at the Oswego County Correctional Facility in Oswego. The county jail has 159 beds and is allowed to add up to eight more portable beds. It costs $90 a day per inmate to do so, Todd said. On average about 45 inmates a day have been sent to other county jails, he said. About $100,000 was budgeted this year to pay for sending inmates to other jails. The inmates most often are sent to jails in Madison, Cayuga, Oneida, Wayne, Seneca and Ontario counties. The sheriff explained why the jail population has grown beyond the capacity to hold it: Parolees. When state parolee re-offend or violate terms of their parole, they’re sent to the county jail. Todd said on average he has about 15 parolees lodged at the Oswego County jail. Locals awaiting sentencing. Oswego County residents are housed in the jail while waiting to be sentenced. They currently account for about 150 beds. Locals sentenced to the jail. Oswego County residents, found guilty of misdemeanors and sentenced to one to two years in jail, serve their terms at the Oswego County jail. They currently account for an additional 35 or so beds. Todd asked the Public Safety and Emergency Service Committee for $400,000 to get him through to Oct. 1 and told committee members he’d be back for more before the end of the year. The committee agreed to give him and additional $900,000 through the end of 2012. Read More. |
