800 New Beds at Donovan Prison |

Sacramento The obscure State Public Works Board is expected today to clear the way for a new 800-bed dormitory at Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in Otay Mesa. But the $276 million addition will do little to ease overcrowding at Donovan because the state is planning to use the new dormitory to accommodate an influx of inmates when a Riverside County prison closes in 2016. Donovan houses 3,291 convicts in a facility designed for 2,200, putting it at 150 percent capacity, according to Aug. 31 data supplied by the California Department of Corrections. The soon-to-close prison in Norco held 3,589 inmates as of Aug. 31, but it has a capacity of just 2,491. Read More. |
