Alabama prisons being sued over isolating HIV-positive inmates. (AP) The state of Alabama will make yet another trip to federal court this month to defend a practice it should have ended on its own. At issue this time? The state's policy of housing inmates who are infected with HIV in special units away from other prisoners. The Alabama Department of Corrections argued that a federal judge should dismiss the lawsuit, which was filed by the American Civil Liberties Union on behalf of eight Alabama inmates. But U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson refused. The trial is scheduled to start Sept. 17. It should not have come to this. More than two years ago, the ACLU made a solid case for why Alabama should stop segregating prisoners just because they are infected with HIV. The organization noted -- and, not incidentally, Thompson's order also noted -- that Alabama and South Carolina are the only two states that isolate inmates with HIV. Read More. |
