Oklahoma State Penitentary sees increasing violence, suicides |

Though it faces challenges every day in housing the bulk of Oklahoma's maximum-security inmates, the past year at Oklahoma State Penitentiary has included multiple inmate suicides and a few violent incidents that posed risks for inmates and staff. The Sept. 3 death of inmate William Eugene Davis is still being investigated, pending the result of an autopsy by the Medical Examiner's Office. Davis, 55, was found unresponsive in his cell at OSP, where he was serving time for three first-degree murder convictions in Cleveland County. Officials said there were no signs of foul play, but he had a cell mate at the time of his death. Since 2011, records show 23 inmates have died at OSP, and though most died from natural causes or scheduled executions by the state, at least five deaths were suicides. Causes of several others are listed as "pending" or accidental, and one death was ruled a homicide because it was the result of injuries from a stabbing that occurred several years earlier.
