County jail is still over capacity

NORMAN, OK — Water district project tabled during meeting

The number of inmates in the Cleveland County jail continues to grow, even though it has been over capacity for the past few weeks.

Cleveland County Sheriff Joe Lester reported Monday during the county commissioner’s meeting that the jail was over capacity by about 60 inmates. The F. DeWayne Beggs Detention Center is only supposed to hold 350 prisoners without opening additional prisoner pods.

As of Monday morning, there were 411 inmates in the jail. Of those, 98 inmates are eligible to be transferred by the state to the Department of Corrections to serve sentences.

Last week, the jail had 401 inmates. The week before, it had 393.

Lester said part of the problem is the state does not have any room for the inmates.

“I understand that, but it’s not Cleveland County’s position to support the state of Oklahoma,” Commissioner Rusty Sullivan said. “It’s not our citizens’ responsibility to support the system and pay for the state of Oklahoma. We’re responsible for Cleveland County prisoners.”

Sullivan also requested that the board receive a list of the names and dates of sentencing of those waiting on the Department of Corrections. The DOC is scheduled to take around 10 to 15 inmates per month.

Rural Water District Project: The board of commissioners tabled an item until next week regarding the Rural Water District No. 1 Project. The item was a request from the water district for a 12-month extension on the project and the continued partial support from CDBG funding.

Commissioners Rusty Sullivan and Rod Cleveland said this project has been extended several times, which has been ongoing for more than five years.

Last year, they said it would be the last extension they were going to ask for. The board approved the extension because the water district said they had a plan and they were going to give the board their plans.

“They were going to give us the plan if we extended it, and I never got a plan as to a timeline to when they’re going to start drilling wells and when they’re going to start laying pipe,” Cleveland said.

One thing Cleveland said he’d like to know is how much money they have right now, if they are spending it and using it, and if so, what for? Also, if it doesn’t get approved will they have to pay that money back?
