Washington prison crowding addressed in independent report |

A new, $230 million prisoner reception facility in Grand Mound, Wash., could be the most viable option for dealing with over-crowding in prisons across the state, according to a recent report from Olympia-based Criminal Justice Planning Services. Nearly 1,200 additional male inmates and 91 fewer female inmates will require housing in the state’s prison system during the next ten years, according to the June 2012 caseload forecast. By 2022, DOC anticipates a shortage of more than 1,100 beds for male prisoners, 900 of which would be in medium security facilities. Currently, the DOC has sufficient space at maximum and minimum security facilities to house offenders. However, the department lacks 200 beds for males in reception and 200 beds at medium security facilities for men. Read More. |
