Jail garden program earns state kudos for Sandusky County |

Ohio - FREMONT — In recognition of a program that allows inmates to grow their own food, Auditor of State Dave Yost today presented Sandusky County Sheriff Kyle Overmyer with the inaugural Taxpayer Hero award. Sandusky County Jail inmates tend a 1.5-acre vegetable garden which helped saved more than $20,000 in taxpayer dollars since its inception in 2009. The inmates grow everything from corn to tomatoes, and all produce grown is prepared on site. “It takes a good team to do things in this manner — to go forward [with the garden] — and we’ll continue to do that here,” Overmyer said, adding appreciation for his staff.
