Washington Department of Corrections searches for solutions to offender crowding |

In a state where more than eight out of every 10 prisoners have committed a violent crime, overcrowding in facilities can be dangerous, corrections officials say. For the Washington State Department of Corrections, increasing prisoner capacity is a necessary expense for the near future, though budget constraints require a hard look at economical options for offender housing, according to a recent independent report on cost-effective incarceration in Washington. The Washington Legislature requested the report to examine housing options going into the next biennial budget cycle.
