| Telfair State correctional officer dead after being assaulted by prisoner, officials say |

Georgia -- A correctional officer at Telfair State Prison died Thursday night after being assaulted by an inmate at the facility in Helena, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections. The officer’s identity hasn’t been released, but his body has been sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s crime lab in Atlanta, said Telfair County Coroner Church Bethea. The GBI and Department of Corrections are investigating the incident. The assault happened at about 7:30 p.m., said Todd Lowery, special agent in charge of the GBI’s Eastman office. Read More. |
