Four of the five federal inmates who escaped from a Frio County (Texas) private prison last month remained at large Thursday, but officials said they've nabbed two people who helped the escapees vanish into a protective underworld of prison-gang sympathizers. Held on charges of instigating or aiding a federal escape are Randy Folsom, 42, and Debra Ayala, 44, both of San Antonio. U.S. Marshals Service officials, who arrested them Wednesday, said Folsom drove as many as four of the "Frio Five" escapees from the Pearsall lockup Aug. 6. The fifth inmate went his own way and later surrendered, but the other four were delivered - perhaps with the help of other drivers - to Ayala's residence, where they hid for many days, officials said. "We do have reason to believe they are still in the United States," said Deputy U.S. Marshal Timothy Hughes. "We do believe they were in this county at one point in time." Rewards of $10,000 are posted for each of the missing inmates, all with Mexican Mafia affiliations, officials said. They are Jorge Arturo Castaneda Silva, 23; Luis Angel Garcia Esparza, 23; Victor Hugo Nava Franco, 28; and Reymundo Alaniz Flores, 46. Back in custody is Manuel de La Fuente, 33, who was arrested Aug. 16 at his father's home in Laredo. The five inmates exited the private prison in daylight through cuts in the chain-link fencing of the recreation yard. |
