Judge once again delays Dwight Correctional Center closure |

Illinois -- A circuit judge in Southern Illinois has ruled in favor of an injunction to prevent inmate transfers and stop layoffs of correction employees at Dwight Correctional Center and other facilities slated for closure. Now, it may be up to the Illinois Supreme Court to determine what will happen next. The request came from the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, and the Illinois Department of Corrections has repeatedly stated their intention of moving forward with scheduled closures. Last week, Associate Circuit Court Judge Charles Cavaness, of Alexander County, received closing arguments in the lawsuit filed by AFSCME Council 31 to block the closings. His ruling on Wednesday will stop efforts to close Dwight prison. "I am hopeful we will come to a long-term resolution that will allow Dwight Correctional Center to continue operating for years to come," said state Rep. Jason Barickman, R-Champaign. "I would like to see any further movement on state facility closures to at least be delayed until the General Assembly returns for fall veto sessions in late November. Read More. |
