Vanderburgh inmates to clean up roads |

EVANSVILLE — The Indiana Department of Corrections, along with the state Department of Transportation, Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office and Keep Evansville Beautiful are joining forces to tackle litter along major roadways. Indiana Department of Correction Commissioner Bruce Lemmon said using inmates to clean along roadways is a great deal for Indiana taxpayers and Vanderburgh County. "It provides an opportunity for offenders to give back to the communities from which they have taken so much," Lemmon said in a statement released Tuesday. The idea for inmate-labored community clean up in Vanderburgh County is not new, but due to legal restrictions, it never came to fruition. Keep Evansville Beautiful President Cheryl Musgrave said when she stepped into office six months ago, she went to work on the project. And after a single, 10 minute visit to Lemmon's office, Musgrave said she received the waiver needed to establish the partnership. Read More. |
