SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Department of Justice is bringing nearly a million dollars to help victims of domestic violence in Salt Lake City.

A $900,000 grant announced this week for the Salt Lake Area Family Justice Center will help pay for police detective overtime, so officers can follow up on restraining order violations more promptly.

It will also fund a project between prosecutors and the Department of Corrections that officials say will hold domestic violence offenders more accountable for their actions.

Salt Lake City police say the grant is a 50 percent increase over funding received in the past.

The Salt Lake Area Family Justice Center opened in 2007 and has since served nearly 3,700 victims and survivors of family violence. It offers shelter for victims, counseling and other services.
