| Newspapers make arguments for more open executions in PA in federal courts |

Two of the state's major newspapers went to federal court today in their quest for greater openness in Pennsylvania's execution process. The Patriot-News and The Philadelphia Inquirer have jointly asked U.S. District Judge Yvette Kane to bar the state Department of Corrections from proceeding with any executions under its current rules. The papers argue the rules - which call for most of the procedure to occur behind a drawn curtain - prevent media witnesses' from being able to report fully and accurately on the execution process.
