New blocking system in state prison will render cellphones useless |

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KCRA) — A new cellphone blocking system will be turned on next week at a Central Valley prison, intended to make phones behind bars worthless. California State Prisons are in the midst of a cellphone crisis. About 15,000 wireless devices were confiscated last year, and so far in 2012, more than 8,000 have been taken. More than 60 miles south of Fresno, Avenal State Prison was built in a fairly remote area. But even as it sits in a middle-of-nowhere location, thousands of confiscated phones prove the inmates are well-connected. "We honestly can't understand why there is such a big concern over the use of cellphones," said inmate Sergio Contreres, who is serving a life sentence. "Why can't they just make it legal?"
