Honoring 'the best of the best'

IONIA, Mich. -- When many people hear "corrections officer," they think of guards paid to keep criminals in prison, out of sight and out of mind. Michigan Department of Corrections Director Daniel Heyns wants the community to have a different understanding.

. "Corrections officers take care of people who need to turn their life around," he said. "If not, we all fail."

. Five local men who exemplify this breed of corrections officer were honored by the Ionia Rotary Club at the organization's Corrections Officer of the Year Celebration Wednesday evening at the Steele Street Hall in Ionia.
