The murder trial began last week for a southwest Virginia prison inmate charged with killing his cellmate. Twenty-seven-year-old Joseph Armstrong is charged with capital murder and prosecutors say he strangled 29-year-old Kenneth Boothe in May 2002 at Red Onion prison in Wise County because Boothe was gay. According to court records, the former Navy man was serving life plus 45 years for his role in a murder and several robberies in Hampton Roads, and had history of attacking inmates and officers. He also was known to have spoken out against gays. Boothe was serving time for crimes that included sexual attacks on a three-year-old girl and on a fellow jail inmate while in Smyth County. Armstrong has said that he is innocent and that he moved Boothe's body after the inmate hanged himself. |
