Woodlanders learn about rival gangs

California - Nortenos and Surenos were the primary topic of conversation Wednesday night at a gang awareness forum.

Around 50 community members gathered at Dingle Elementary's cafeteria as Woodland Police Sgt. Heath Parsons, supervisor of the Yolo County Gang Task Force, outlined specifics of each organization, from symbols to associated colors, and ways locals can be proactive in their own safety.

"I'm a realist," Parsons said. "I don't think we will eradicate (gang activity). But we're going to do everything we can to disrupt them."

There are more than 900 validated gang members in Yolo County, of which 400 to 450 are in Woodland, Parsons said. Parsons estimates that there are more like 2,000 gang members in the county, which he said is about average for California.
