Inmate receives settlement over jail beating

An inmate who said he was beaten by correction officers at the York County (Maine) Jail has been awarded a settlement of $95,000.
Kingsley Nwaturocha had asked for damages of $2 million in his original notice of claim, according to his attorney, Sarah Churchill. The demand was later reduced to $350,000 and it was further cut in mediation.
Nwaturocha was one of three suspects charged with raping a 14-year-old Gorham girl in an Old Orchard Beach motel in 2002.
The Nigerian national said three corrections officers participated in the attack and that one threatened to kill him while he was awaiting trial. He was transferred to the Cumberland County Jail after the attack.
Nwaturocha was freed in July 2003 and the charges were dismissed because his DNA did not match semen samples from the victim. The other two men pleaded guilty to assault charges.
