Rules for diversion program loosened |

California - Placing criminal defendants in a Ventura County electronic monitoring program will be easier and they will subsidize more of the cost under policies approved Tuesday. County supervisors approved the revisions in the program begun a year ago to provide space in jails for a shift of state prisoners. Sheriff Geoff Dean can send defendants awaiting trial directly into electronic monitoring because legislators have loosened the requirement that they serve time in jail first. He also can enroll defendants without waiting for a judge to release them on their own recognizance. Under another change, the Ventura County Sheriff's Office will consider financial resources beyond the person's wages to calculate how much the person can pay toward the cost.
