NM prison officials expand inmate audit to 2006 |

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - State prison officials are combing through 25,000 inmate files going back to 2006 for an audit on mistaken early releases. Department of Corrections Secretary Gregg Marcantel says that officials decided to expand an audit of inmate records after discovering that the system hadn't seen a detailed audit of records in six years. The move comes after the corrections department recently discovered some cases where inmates were improperly let out of prison before their release dates. Earlier this month, for example, the department said a man who was serving 39 years in prison for the deaths of 2 people in a remote cabin near Torreon was mistakenly released twice from prison this year.
