County focuses on suicide prevention |

New Mexico - New policies approved by the Sandoval County Commission to prevent inmate suicides at the county detention center include adding varying degrees of risk levels, according to Sandoval County Detention Center Director Al Casamento. Following the suicides of three inmates last year, the detention center in May contracted with a correctional health care facility to begin implementing enhanced suicide prevention techniques. Adding levels of potential risk for suicide now mean that inmates can be monitored more appropriately according to their risk for fatally injuring themselves, Casamento said. “We had not had the different levels,” Casamento said. “We had ‘on suicide watch’ or ‘off suicide watch.’” There are now three defined risk levels.
