A former Mass. correctional officer was sentenced to a year and three months in prison after she pleaded guilty to smuggling heroin to an inmate who then died from an overdose. Christine Callahan, 36, of Weymouth, who worked at the Norfolk County House of Corrections, had been scheduled to go to trial on Sept. 7, but at the last minute changed her plea to guilty on a manslaughter charge. She also pleaded guilty to distribution of heroin and distribution of heroin in a jail. Norfolk Superior Court Judge Barbara Dortch-Okara sentenced Callahan last Monday to 2 years in jail - of which she must serve half. The sentence was based on a joint recommendation from prosecutors and defense attorneys. Inmate Anthony Marchetti, 34, of East Bridgewater, died of an overdose in May 2002. An autopsy found the cause of death to be opiate intoxication. Callahan was placed on paid administrative leave soon afterward and was indicted in October 2002. She pleaded innocent. |
