Judge pushes for county to operate jail instead of contractors |

A local judge is pushing to have the jail system self-operated again by the county with the hopes of saving millions of dollars each year instead of paying it to a contractor. The Liberty County Commissioners Court listened to a presentation on Oct. 23 by Lynn Greenwood, an instructor of criminal justice at Texas A&M University-Central, comparing the cost effectiveness of the county running its own jail facility versus having a private contractor operating the facility. She explained that by comparing 14 other jails that use contractors, approximately 77-percent of their budget are used for personnel. She noted that no one has been part of the sheriff’s office when the county operated the jail for the past 20 years. “You’re biggest asset will be to bring in an experienced jail administrator to operate the facility,” she said.
