Although inmates Fernando Real and Andy Torres were supposed to be kept apart, investigators said Real repeatedly stabbed Torres this afternoon when they were both briefly placed together in a holding cell at the Criminal Justice Center. Investigators are working to determine how Real - who is awaiting trial on charges of murder and attempted murder - was able to smuggle into the center the 6-inch homemade shank fashioned out of metal. "It was pointy, like an ice pick," said sheriff's Capt. Mark Stipa. Police charged Real, 21, with aggravated assault, simple assault, weapons offenses and other related charges for the attack. Torres, 21, of the city's Feltonville section, was stabbed six or seven times in the shoulder, upper arm and back, Stipa said. He was in stable condition last week at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. Municipal Court Judge Marsha H. Neifield had just ordered codefendants Real and Torres to stand trial on charges of attempted murder for a shooting a year ago when the men were escorted into a plexiglass holding cell next to the 10th floor courtroom. Two deputies accompanied them. During the hearing, Real learned that Torres allegedly had given a statement to police implicating him in the shooting, said Torres' defense attorney Allan Sagot. "We were in the courtroom, and we heard screaming in the back," Sagot said. About a half-dozen sheriff's deputies, with guns drawn, burst into the courtroom to assist the two deputies in the holding cell, Sagot said. No deputies were injured while subduing Real, Stipa said. Stipa said Real somehow brought the weapon from the Philadelphia Prison Industrial Correction Center, although the inmate was screened by a metal detector at the Correction Center and by hand-held detectors on the prison bus. Torres was being held at the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility. |
