Guards shot and killed a 23-year-old inmate Friday at High Desert State Prison in Susanville during an attack on another inmate, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. The inmate who was killed was one of two who attacked another inmate in a maximum-security yard. The man who was being attacked "was knocked to the ground and the two attacking inmates kicked him in his head and stabbed him several times with an inmate-made weapon," the department said in a statement. The attacking inmates continued their assault, and a correctional officer fired one round from a state-issued Mini-14 rifle, hitting one of the attackers, according to the department. The inmate who was shot was pronounced dead at 11:17 a.m. Friday. He had been serving an 82-year-to-life sentence from San Diego County for first-degree murder, the department said. Read More. |
