| Assault of Cuyahoga jail guard triggers concerns about staffing and safety |

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Shortly after starting his overnight shift at the Cuyahoga County Jail on Jan. 8, Anthony Santiago, a 25-year-old corrections officer, turned his attention to an inmate who was kicking at his cell door after complaining he wanted to be moved. Santiago peered in and saw Vincent Torres, 19, standing on the sink. The officer unlocked the door and went inside. Torres, who was in jail on sex-crime charges, jumped down and attacked Santiago, punching him in the face. Santiago tried to push the inmate back and activate an emergency radio signal, but Torres pummeled him to the ground, then kicked him in the head. The attack left Santiago unconscious with a broken nose. In the months afterward, he reported suffering from panic attacks and post-traumatic stress, which has kept him out of work. Read More. |
