State investigators want to know how inmates on work crews built an underground fort outside the perimeter fence of a medium-security prison in Spartanburg County (S.C.). Charles Sheppard, inspector general for the state Department of Corrections, said the prisoners' hangout was discovered Sunday at the Tyger River Correctional Institution near Enoree. Sheppard said the inmates used the structure during "down times" to lift weights and socialize. Investigators believe it was built about two weeks ago. The back of the structure had a dirt berm so officers couldn't see it from the prison. It was built with scrap lumber by inmates on work crews brought from Columbia to work on fences. |
