| Prison, consulate sign education agreement |

Three agencies have come together to offer Spanish-speaking prison inmates a chance at improving their education through a unique agreement signed Tuesday. The Consulate of Mexico in Calexico, the Mexican National Institute of Adult Education and Calipatria State Prison have all collaborated to offer the program Plaza Comunitaria at the prison. The agreement is the first of its kind with a California state prison. Plaza Comunitaria, a Spanish literacy and adult education program, will now be offered to inmates, regardless of nationality, who want to complete their primary and secondary education before potentially moving on to higher studies. The program already has a widespread presence in almost all of the United States and is held in other places such as community centers, schools and churches. Read More. |
