Despite push to close prisons, state still hiring guards |

SPRINGFIELD , IL— Gov. Pat Quinn’s push to close two Illinois prisons doesn’t mean the state isn’t still hiring workers to guard inmates. According to Illinois Department of Corrections figures, the agency hired 135 correctional officers in early November after the cadets underwent a six week training session. The new hires, however, aren’t adding to the total number of guards on the state payroll. The number of guards as of Thursday — 6,669 — is down 30 from the total at the same time last year. IDOC spokeswoman Stacey Solano said the new officers will replace some of the 206 employees who have left the job during the current fiscal year. At the same point last year, the agency had seen 343 guards depart. “Thus, total attrition is down versus the same point in time last year,” Solano said in an email. Read More. |
