| Whitworth Detention Center to become all-female jail |

HARTWELL — The Georgia Department of Corrections Whitworth Detention Center in Hartwell will be changed from housing men to housing only women inmates. The change could be a financial blow to towns and counties that rely on cheap labor by male prisoners. Hart County administrator Jon Caime and Lavonia city manager Gary Fesperman say they were recently informed of the change by the Georgia Department of Corrections. "The Whitworth Detention Center will be changing to an all female population," Georgia Department of Corrections spokeswoman Gwendolyn Hogan said Thursday. That switch could cause major financial problems not only for Hart County and Lavonia, but also for seven northeast Georgia counties and their municipalities that depend on Whitworth's male prison labor to supplement their personnel and budgets.
