An animal rights group is seeking vegan meals for an Attica state prison inmate who says he's opposed on ethical grounds to eating animal products. Sean Wellcome is serving 37 years to life on assault and burglary charges. A letter from the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals to the Attica warden's office says Wellcome is concerned about "what is right and wrong." The letter says the maximum-security prison has a constitutional obligation to provide vegan meals to Wellcome. That point is disputed by Department of Correctional Services spokesman James Flateau. Flateau said that while the prisons provide kosher meals to Jewish inmates and make other exceptions on religious grounds, there is no provision in the state Constitution obligating the serving of vegan meals. |
