MISSISSIPPI - Hinds County is moving a step closer to hashing out what’s the most cost-efficient way to address an aging and unsafe jail. To get figures, the Board of Supervisors is putting a number of options out to bid but with no immediate plans to settle on just one solution. Supervisors and Sheriff Tyrone Lewis are looking at privatizing all or part of operations, building a new jail, upgrading the existing facility, and adding a fourth housing unit for female prisoners at the Raymond jail, rather than housing them as they do now in downtown Jackson. Selling the jail is another possibility, said District 3 Supervisor Peggy Hobson Calhoun. “We want to look at all options,” said Dana Sims, the Sheriff’s Department attorney. “It’s necessary that we specify that we are not going with one particular way to do things.
