| Monroe prison officers told not to restrain dangerous killer |

MONROE, WASHINGTON- On Sept. 2, 2008, Isaac Zamora went on a shooting rampage in rural Skagit County, killing six people and injuring two others. Now, the corrections officer’s union said their members are in danger of Zamora because staff members are being instructed not to restrain him when he is out of his prison cell. Zamora pleaded guilty to 18 of 20 criminal counts, pleading not guilty by reason of insanity to the other two. That plea got him sent to Western State Mental Hospital instead of state prison. In June, the Department of Social and Health Services asked a judge to permanently move Zamora out of Western State, saying he was a threat to staff and other patients. They also worried he might manage to escape. Judge Michael Rickert initially denied the request. But on Dec. 5, Department of Corrections officials accepted a request from the DSHS to transfer Zamora to the maximum custody Special Offender Unit at the Monroe Correctional Complex. Read More. |
