Several trays of leftover baked beans are the chief suspect in an apparent outbreak of food poisoning at the Palm Beach County Stockade that left more than 150 inmates with nausea and stomach illnesses last week. The complaints started not long after lunch was served Wednesday for 850 inmates at the county stockade. In all, at least 159 inmates reported symptoms, according to the sheriff's office. "It was a pretty quick onset," said Tim O'Connor, a spokesman for the county health department. "They had a lot of people reporting vomiting and diarrhea." No one appeared to have any lasting effects, he added. The health department is still investigating the cause of the illnesses, which it says appear to stem from food poisoning. Officials are testing the baked beans served for lunch Wednesday - as well as samples of pudding and turkey bologna that also were served - but they have not yet determined the cause of the outbreak. Sheriff's officials, however, suspect the beans are the culprits. |
