| State inmates not allowed to light menorah candles |

Arizona is one of seven states that does not allow Jewish prison inmates to light the Hanukkah menorah with real candles and matches. When Rabbi Zalman Levertov, director of Chabad of Arizona, learned last year that Arizona prisoners were not allowed to light real candles in a Hanukkah menorah, he suggested to an Arizona Department of Corrections (ADC) chaplain that oil be used instead of candles. However, he learned that the suggestion was not implemented and that only electric menorahs were permitted during this year's holiday. "The miracle is to ignite the light," said Levertov. "You cannot do the mitzvah on an electric menorah." Levertov is working in conjunction with the Aleph Institute, a nonprofit organization based in New York that assists Jewish prisoners across the country, to change Arizona's policy. Read More. |
