An inmate accused of stabbing a co-defendant in a courthouse holding cell last week is now accused of stabbing another inmate six times in a Philadelphia prison on Monday. City prison spokesman Bob Eskind said Fernando Real, 21, stabbed Ali Smith, 29, who was serving a drug-related sentence, in the back, forearm, nose, face and head after officers let several inmates out of their cells for showers and breakfast at the Philadelphia Industrial Correctional Center. The inmates were subdued with pepper spray, and Smith was treated for his injuries at Frankford-Torresdale Hospital and released, Eskind said. On Sept. 14, Real was accused of stabbing Andy Torres, 21, a co-defendant on attempted murder charges in a September shooting, in a holding cell at the city's Criminal Justice Center with a smuggled knife. Prison Commissioner Leon King has ordered an internal investigation into how Real was again able to get a weapon and stab another inmate on Monday, and he plans disciplinary action, Eskind said. "The commissioner wanted it known that there were orders for this inmate to be transferred to a more secure housing area and to be shackled and leg irons put on him whenever he's out" of his cell, Eskind said. "Those orders were not followed." Eskind said Real was being transferred to the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility, a more secure prison about one-quarter mile from PICC. Police began a criminal investigation, and Real was expected to be charged with aggravated assault, said Inspector William Colarulo, a police spokesman. |
