MASSACHUSETTS - LOWELL -- Corrections officers often get urine and feces thrown at them while watching inmates. Sometimes they are assaulted on the job, such as the corrections officer at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley who was stabbed by an inmate in June. They also don't get the public attention and respect that police and firefighters do in a community for their work protecting the public. As Viki Sharp of New York City's Department of Corrections said Monday, "Corrections officers have one of the most psychologically, emotionally and physically demanding jobs out there, while getting little recognition for what they do."
