Four of the 88 non-violent misdemeanor offenders who were allowed to return home during Hurricane Ivan had yet to report back to the Mobile County (Ala.) Metro Jail as of Wednesday, officials said. The Mobile County Metro County Jail Warden and Sheriff's Department spokeswoman denied Mobile Register requests for the inmates' names. "We're scrambling, I really don't have those before me right now," said Warden Mike Haley. Haley said that his staff was too busy to comply with the request and that "the public is not interested in these people." All 88 prisoners had signed a release saying that they would return back to the jail on Friday at noon, Haley said. Haley, who runs the 1,144-bed facility on Royal Street in Mobile's waterfront area, said members of the correctional community were surprised that so many of the inmates returned to the jail on their own accord. Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Christina Bowersox, in a later interview, said the department could not release the names for security reasons as the warden does not want the missing inmates to know the department is out looking for them. Mobile County Sheriff Jack Tillman said he would not question his warden's decision to withhold the names of the inmates who failed to report back on time. Tillman said he expected that the inmates would be picked up today. Tillman said deputies had been working hard during the storm and had not had time to make contact with the missing inmates. The sheriff then said his office might release the names today. |
