Hinds County (Miss.) authorities searched Wednesday for a jail inmate who escaped from a work detail at Oakley Training School in Raymond on Monday by stealing a school employee's car, officials said. Christopher Wade Lane, serving a five-year sentence for auto theft, was working as a groundsman and had been incarcerated at the Hinds County Adult Detention Center in Raymond since October 2001, Sheriff Malcolm McMillin said. Lane, 37, left the school in a silver 2000 Ford Contour, with a license plate number of 877 HII, McMillin said. "Lane has family in the area, and we believe he is still in the area," McMillin said. Only nonviolent offenders are assigned to work details, McMillin said. Lane was scheduled to be released in August 2005, but he will face an additional charge of escape when located, McMillin said. Escape, upon conviction, carries a penalty of up to five years, according to state law. Anyone with information on Lane's whereabouts is asked to contact the Hinds County Sheriff's Department at 857-2600. |
