The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation may know as early as today why an inmate died in the Catawba County jail Saturday afternoon. The 29-year-old man, whose name was not released pending notification of out-of-state relatives, had been in custody for about eight days, awaiting trial on charges of driving while impaired and driving without a license, said Catawba County Sheriff David Huffman. The man had caused a violent disturbance in his cell and deputies brought him out "just to make sure he didn't hurt himself," Huffman said. At that point, the inmate became violent and struggled with deputies until they placed him in a restraining chair, Huffman said. The inmate died some time later. Huffman said Sunday he was not aware of any deputies being injured during the struggle. The restraining chair, a device approved by the Department of Correction, is equipped with tie-downs for the arms and legs, and does not effect an inmate's ability to breathe, Huffman said. An autopsy will be conducted and investigators are looking into whether the man had a history of medical trouble, he added. "We turned this directly over to the SBI. They got the information from the minute we found out, then we backed off," Huffman said. |
